Activity 3

There is a sensible reasoning that before you decide to bid on an item at auction, you should attend one of the viewing sessions to physically examine the items you are interested in to check condition and authenticity. To simulate this situation, one of your tutors has brought in 10 items for your examination. The questions are contained in the document 'Enterprise activity identify the objects' on Ectolearning. Each group will be given time to examine the items. You will be provided with a magnifying glass so that you can view any markings/fine details on the item. Following the examination, you should conduct further research on the internet to assist in arriving at the answers. Your answers should be posted on your group blog.

Activity 2

One of the tutors presented 6 pictures for sale at the Mctears Auction House (URL www.mctears.co.uk) for the sale on 13-Sep-2008. Before any group should bid on any item at auction, it is necessary to conduct research into candidate items. If you log into the NQ Enterprise BLOG in www.ectolearning.com and open the document Enterprise Activity 1, you will be presented with the assignment. Each picture has an associated question and your answers should be posted on your group BLOG. Your tutor will comment on your submission.

Activity 1 - Group Selection

Now that you have been introduced to the unit, there is a requirement to form groups with a minimum of four team members. The group should appoint a team captain who will be the person designated to bid on the auction items selected by the group. All members will view the auction and be involved in the selection of which items to bid on and the maximum value to bid on these items. To establish team identity, each team should come up with a unique team name. The team should set up a group BLOG based on the group name and provide the course tutor with the URL link.

Introduction

The computing and Internet Technologies Department are launching a brand new enterprise unit as part of the new Access/NQ Digital Media course. The Executive Management Team has kindly offered to bankroll the project.

The prime idea is for students to purchase potentially profitable items from a local auction house, namely McTears, and offer them for sale on ebay with the aim of achieving a dramatic profit.

The students will be advised by their resident antique experts, namely myself and Lynne Forbes. Items which fail to sell on ebay or are deemed inappropriate for ebay will be presented for sale in a ‘car boot’ format in the college foyer. In the event of any items failing to sell, they will be offered back in auction at McTears or another venue.

In the unlikely event of making a loss, Lynne and myself will be called to the boardroom to meet with Bob McGrory aka Sir Alan Sugar and whoever made the greatest loss will be FIR…… . . .disappointed.

At this stage I would like to make it absolutely clear that there is absolutely no rivalry between the experts as to which class will achieve the highest profit. It has come to our attention that a member of the paparazzi caught the antique experts in friendly discussion over an auction item. Our legal representatives are looking into the matter. There is an unsubstantiated rumour circulating that the photographer was hired by a section leader in CIT trying to display his network poster in the background.

We are convinced this unit will benefit students in entrepreneurial skills, citizenship, employability, selling, marketing, negotiating, advertising, communications, photography, distribution, blogging, money management to name a few…. . . . . well actually quite a lot.
